Overview

Visiting academics coming to New Zealand to accomplish activities of a pedagogical, instructive, professional management or research nature can arrive in New Zealand on a visitor visa, as long as they fulfil visa requirements.

With this visa you can: Work in New Zealand as an academic.

This visa will not permit you to stay longer than 3 months in any calendar year, you’ll need to apply for a work visa if you want to stay longer than 3 months. If you want to take part in work activities that aren’t directly related to educational, teaching, professional management or PhD activities, you’ll need to apply for a work visa.

Who is it for

If you wish to visit New Zealand as an academic to participate in activities like teaching, educational, professional management or research, you should apply for an Academic Visitor Visa. You must have a letter of invitation from the tertiary education institute you plan to work at.

How to qualify

  1. Your stay is for three months or less (or multiple short stays amount to three months or less per calendar year)
  2. You are a national of a country where a visa waiver applies
  3. You are well qualified in their field, and are either employed by an overseas academic or research institution, or have wide experience
  4. The nature of your visit meets the pedagogical, educational, professional management or research requirements defined by immigration
  5. You have a letter of invitation from the institution as a Visiting Academic

The process

Step 1- Apply for your visa

Before you apply, check if you are from a Visa Waiver country.

Complete the paper application form and send it to Immigration New Zealand with your application fee, immigration levy, and the documents listed in the checklist on the form.

Step 2 – Decision about your application

If there is anything else you need to do, Immigration NZ will be in touch.

If you are in New Zealand, and your current temporary visa expires before your new visa is granted, Immigration New Zealand will normally issue you an interim visa to let you stay in New Zealand lawfully.

The document needed

All applicants must provide:

  • Completed, signed application form.
  • Appropriate fee and levies
  • Two passport-sized colour photographs for everyone included in the application.
  • Passport or travel document* for everyone included in the application.
  • Medical or chest X-ray certificates if required by Section E: Health for everyone included in the application.
  • Evidence of financial support consisting of:
    • a completed Sponsorship Form For Temporary Entry (INZ 1025), or
    • evidence showing you have sufficient funds in your name to support yourself.
  • Evidence that you have the means to leave New Zealand consisting of:
    • a completed Sponsorship Form For Temporary Entry (INZ 1025), or
    • pre-purchased travel out of New Zealand, or
    • evidence showing you have sufficient funds in your name to purchase travel out of New Zealand.
  • If your partner and/or dependent children are included in this application:
    • evidence of your relationship with your partner and/or
    • evidence that you are the parent or legal guardian of the children included in this application

Government Fees

Application cost $ 167

This is the charge for Immigration New Zealand to process your application. Immigration New Zealand does not refund application costs if your application is refused. A non-refundable immigration levy is charged and is included in the cost.

Each person must pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) of NZD $35. This is included in the cost.
