Overview

Individuals who perform domestic work for overseas diplomatic, consular or official staff, can apply for a temporary visa to work for their employer in New Zealand while their employer has a placement here. To apply for this visa, you must be at least 18 years old or over and have your employer’s and New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s backing for your temporary domestic work visa submission. If you get the visa approval, you will be required to start working for your employer in a domestic role, like as a nanny, cook, driver, gardener or other. This visa will allow you to stay and work in New Zealand for the same duration of time as your employer’s New Zealand placement.

  • Do domestic work for your employer while they’re in New Zealand on a diplomatic, consular or official posting.

How to qualify

Genuine intentions: You must genuinely intend to meet the conditions of your visa

Age: You must be 18 or over

New Zealand employer guarantee: Your employer must sign a statement of undertaking

Employment conditions: You must sign a declaration of acceptance

MFAT approval: New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) must not object to your work visa

The process

Step 1 – You apply for a work visa

You will require to complete a ‘Work Visa Application’ and send it to Immigration New Zealand together with your application fee, immigration levy and supporting documents, including your:

  • ‘Declaration of Acceptance’
  • employer’s ‘Statement of Undertaking’.

Step 2 – Decision about your application

If you need to submit anything, Immigration New Zealand will be in touch.

If you are in New Zealand, and your current temporary visa expires before your new visa is granted, Immigration NZ will normally issue you an interim visa to let you stay in New Zealand legally.

The document needed

  • Completed, signed application form.
  • Appropriate application fee and levies.
  • Two passport-sized colour photographs.
  • Passport or travel document*.
  • Medical and chest X-ray certificates if required by Section C: Your health.
  • Police certificates if required by Section D: Your character.
  • Applicants for visas based on employment must also provide:
  • A job offer and a job description, including:
    • name and contact details of person offering employment
    • correct legal name of the employer (legal name of the organisation)
    • your name (as specified in your passport)
    • your address
    • job title
    • location of employment
    • type of work, duties and responsibilities of the position
    • pay and conditions
    • how many hours you will work each week (note: clauses that indicate the hours of work may fall below 30 hours will not be accepted)
    • qualifications, experience or training required
    • duration of job (note: the duration of the visa is not a reason to offer fixed term employment)
    • how long the job offer is open
  • Evidence of qualifications relevant to the job offer.
  • Evidence of work experience relevant to the job offer.
  • Evidence they have met or are able to meet any necessary
  • New Zealand registration requirements.

Application cost: NZD$ 332

This is the government application charge for Immigration New Zealand to process your application. Immigration New Zealand will not refund application costs if your visa is rejected. A non-refundable immigration levy is charged and is included in the cost.

Additional information

Please note the following points:

  • You must depart New Zealand if your employment is completed before your employer’s posting does.
  • People who are already in New Zealand on a working holiday visa aren’t eligible for this visa.
  • You can’t include a partner or dependent children in your visa application.
