This is a temporary visa. Almost all bridging visa categories are applied for automatically as part of applying for a substantive visa. The Department of Home Affairs will inform you if this happens. You must verify if you are holding a Bridging visa A (BVA). You can easily check this on VEVO.

The bridging visa A, subclass 010, is basically a temporary connecting visa that allows the visa holder to stay in Australia lawfully until the finalization of his or her application for a substantive visa comes through. Bridging Visa A sanctions the applicant to stay within the region of Australia and expect the result of the application for a further substantive visa.

Bridging visa A (BVA) is a temporary visa that allows you to stay in Australia after your existing substantive visa expires and while your new substantive visa application lodgment is being processed.

Working in Australia:

If you get a BVA that does not permit you to work in Australia, you can apply for a further Bridging Visa with no conditions if you can prove financial hardship.

Department of Home Affairs will evaluate your situations in relation to your entitlement that you need to work. For permission to do work in Australia, if you do not meet the requirements for work, and you are still qualified for a Bridging visa A, DHA will grant you a new BVA with the same work prevention or limit condition that was on your preceding BVA.

You can’t be granted a new BVA that lets you work if:

  • your BVA was granted to you because you have applied for judicial review of the decision made on your substantive visa application, and
  • that BVA prevents or restricts you from working in Australia.
