Overview

The visa subclass – 864 is a permanent residence visa that lets the aged parent of a settled Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen stay in Australia. The successful visa holder can stay in Australia as a permanent resident, work and study in Australia and avail Australia’s Medicareservices.

Who is it for

This visa is for the aged parents (65 years or above) who want to live in Australia permanently, work, enrol in Australia’s public health care scheme, Medicare and apply for Australian citizenship and passport.

How to qualify

To be eligible to apply, you must:

  • have an eligible child who is a Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen;
  • be aged enough to be qualified for Australian government’s pension scheme;
  • not have already submitted or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when submitting this visa;
  • Pass the balance of family test; and
  • You must both satisfy the character and health requirements

The process

Step 1

Check your eligibility

If you are an aged parent of an Australian PR or citizen or eligible New Zealand Citizen, you must be aware of the balance of family test. You must know clearly what this really means. A parent meets the balance of family test if:

  • at least half their children and stepchildren are eligible children, or
  • there are more eligible children than children living in any other single country

Step 3

Apply for the visa

During your application lodgment, you must be in Australia. This visa must be submitted as a paper based application. You will be unable to apply for this visa if you have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (subclass 870) visa.

You can’t lodge your applications for this visa in person. You can send your application by post to the Parent Visa Processing Centre in Perth, Australia.

Step 4

After you apply

You will be notified by email if your visa is finalized and approved. If the immigration officer requires additional documents, you will also get notified.

Step 5

Visa outcome

When the DHA makes your visa decision, you must be in Australia. You will see the following things in your visa grant notification:

  • your visa grant number
  • the date your visa starts
  • your visa conditions
